Software engineering provides systematic approaches to developing, operating, and maintaining software that meets user needs and organisational goals. Its objectives extend beyond delivering working functionality to ensuring that software is reliable, usable, efficient, and maintainable, while balancing constraints such as time, cost, and available resources. Achieving these objectives requires attention to both the quality of the product and the processes used to build it.

The software development process encompasses fundamental activities such as requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance. These activities can be organised in different ways, giving rise to software lifecycle models that range from sequential approaches to iterative and incremental development. Their organisation influences how teams collaborate, respond to changing requirements, identify problems, and incorporate user feedback, ultimately shaping the quality of the resulting software.

This talk explores how software engineering processes and techniques can help improve software quality from a user experience perspective. It discusses how practices such as understanding user needs, prototyping, usability evaluation, and iterative refinement can be integrated throughout the development lifecycle. The aim is to show how decisions about processes and techniques can support the development of software that fulfils its intended functions while offering a more effective, accessible, and satisfying user experience.

About Luis:

Dr. Luis Rivero is a professor at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), Brazil, where he is affiliated with the Institute of Computing and graduate programmes in Computer Science. His research interests include Software Engineering, Requirements Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, and Computing Education, with a focus on methods and techniques that support software quality and user experience. He has participated in research and development projects in collaboration with industry and public institutions, including EQTLab, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Maranhão (MPMA), the Court of Accounts of the State of Maranhão (TCE-MA), and the Social Service of Industry (SESI), among others. He is currently a visiting researcher at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM), University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, exploring user experience in augmented and virtual reality applications for medical contexts. He also contributes to the academic community through editorial activities and service on programme committees for national and international software engineering conferences.

About Davi:

Dr. Davi Viana is a Professor at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA, Brazil), and a Research Productivity Fellow of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). He holds a Ph.D. in Informatics from the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM, Brazil). He is a member of graduate programs in Computer Science and conducts research in Software Engineering, focusing on software quality, software process improvement, requirements engineering, Human-Computer Interaction and usability. His research also addresses software ecosystems, empirical software engineering, and software engineering education. He is currently a visiting researcher at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM), University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, where his research focuses on software quality assurance, monitoring, and traceability for AI-based healthcare systems.
